American Impressionism was a style of painting related to French Impressionism practiced by American artists in the United States during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Major exhibitions of French impressionist work in Boston and New York in the 1880s introduced the style to the American public.

Dissatisfied with the conservatism of the American art establishment, ten artists from Boston and New York joined together with the intention of creating their own society that valued originality as well as exhibition quality work. Despite early challenges, they achieved popular and critical success.  William Merritt Chase, the most famous member of The Ten, painted some of the most beautiful and beloved pieces in American art.

Come learn more about Chase and The Ten as Beth Stein examines the accomplishments of the members of this very exciting and groundbreaking group of artists.

This program was made possible by a grant from Mass Cultural Council.
