Oil First Place #52- Michael Mills- Fall Collection, Oil
The small painting reads as a very large work. It’s masterfully composed, has a beautiful technique and is a fine example of the genre. The fall colors are accurate and very pleasing.
Oil Second Place #7 Peg Runcie- The Busy Season
This fresh impressionist painting of a boat sitting on the shoreline has a wonderful composition and use of accurate color. I particularly like the reflection of the yellow boat that can be seen in the patterns of the blue water as the water meets the sand. The color of the wet sand and the shadows of the boats that are sitting on it are also very accurate. This is a very pleasing little painting.
Acrylic First Place #3- Phyllis Charles- Poultry Defence League
Love the unusual subject matter and the painting of the negative space around the birds adds a beautiful abstract quality. The use of the bold color just lends itself to that. There is a narrative quality looking like the two birds on the left are in some conspiratorial conversation. This is a strong acrylic painting
Acrylic Second Place #23-John Stringfellow- Whydah
This bold painting packs quite a punch. There’s a lot of action around it and even without looking at the title it had a definite marine feeling about it. It also has a stormy quality that I find refreshing when faced with the color composition of basically red, yellow and blue. Strongly composed and deftly painted.
Other First Place #13- Carol Flax- Dining al Fresco, Cut Reclaimed Paper
This piece has a depth of field that I find very appealing. I also like the color palette. The fact that it is reclaimed paper was astonishing to me when I first saw it. There is a beautiful balance in this composition and a natural feel to it. It was quite a surprise, very well done.
Other Second Place #90 Karen Pinard- Morning Beach II, Mixed Media
I Love the color palette of this little painting. While it does have some natural organic feel to it, it’s a non-objective painting that has been composed with rhythm and grace.
Watercolor First Place #74- Laurel Wilson- Making Friends
This watercolor painting has a strong composition and a narrative quality that is appealing. There are many techniques within this painting that make it a strong contender. It is a familiar scene here in Chatham, and it’s been very well handled from the choice of colors to the wonderful drawing, and the sense of light.
Watercolor Second Place #114- Karol Wyckoff- Brewing Storm
This is a strong watercolor that has a commanding sense of the weather on that day. The sky is absolutely beautiful, it caught my attention right away. The path of the wake leading up to the boat just brings the viewer into the painting.
