Oil 1st place Karen Shortsleeve: West Harwich

Oil 1st place Karen Shortsleeve: West Harwich

What I like most about her painting is the silhouette of the tree and all the different textures. I like the handling of the grass and sand and how that differs from sky and ocean. The perspective is nice too, how it leads you into the painting. It’s all really done quite well and has just a different feel to it I have to sit and think about. Powerful.

Such a pleasing, wonderful, warm, cheerful summer scene. There’s activity with the boats that draws you in and leaves you feeling like you’re moving forward to better times.

I like this one quite a bit. On this piece also you are allowed to enter the painting nicely and exit out the back corner. I get the feeling like you are getting blocked in by the larger elements in the painting. The green dark green bush in the foreground is heavy, but you can still get around it. It is just a nice piece. The blocked-in feeling works with the weather not being the most the perfect day, but still getting such nice color. The shadow is nice too, it adds to the dimension of the painting.

I liked that it is a nostalgic piece with the kids playing in the title pool but it’s also very familiar and something that you see all the time. I think the figures were done very well in watercolor which isn’t easy and I just love the shadows and feeling that it gives me.

I am drawn to this painting because I have stood in front of the dunes and look towards them and I’ve seen that color in the dunes and in the sunset and it reminds me of my experiences. I don’t know much about abstract, but I don’t think I need to know too much about it for this piece to make me have a feeling. I normally do everything that is representational so that’s nice that it speaks to me. I get it. It feels like a giant in front of you, the way the dune does.

This is a lovely silhouette. It is very peaceful and you can really imagine going out in the evening with the moon high up above and it’s just so quiet the way it might feel in nature. I like the graphic feel and the limited color palette.

How does she do it?! I am just amazed at how clean it is and all the fiber detail. I know nothing about fabric, but I can only imagine how hard that must have been. It is quite lovely and has such good colors.

I think it is very representative of late February here on the Cape. The composition is powerful, and you not only have an interesting tree, but also the snow that is on the tree that adds more dimension to the photograph. I like the sepia color, and you really get a feeling for that cold lonely dreary day. Brings the feeling of abandonment and it evokes a lot of emotion.

Gosh who doesn’t like a good vase! I like the shape, her choice of color for a vase is very beautiful, and I love how she’s made the tree go to the other side. The design is unique for each shape and for each surface. It is nice how it continues all the way around. Just very delightful!

I like woodwork because my father works in wood. I know how fragile it is to turn things like this. It’s very smooth and he spent some time on the inside around the knot and showcasing that beauty. I love being able to see what is inside of a tree.
