Best in Show -Karen Sweeney Coming Up for Air Oil $6500
Good use a color and the compositional structure. I like how she went strong and so bold. The bubbles create a nice eye movement, and they have great reflective light. I think one of the most important things we have with a good painting is that the eye stays within the piece and your eye is not going off on a tangent. You’re staying inside the painting, and I think that’s important.
Oil/Acrylic First Place Karol Wyckoff Vermont Summer Farm Oil $2000
I really like this one because this has the traditional landscape structure, and I just love how although all the colors are pretty soft can you still have the bright white house with the rusted old barn with the lavender in the fields. There is a lot of depth and good use of light and color.
Oil/Acrylic Second Place-Martha Little Fuentes The Songstress Oil $1000
What’s interesting about this is it reminds me of a technique that they used to use called ténèbres. You see how it has the dark around the portrait, it’s really extreme dark and then you have this bright light that’s being shown on the on the figure. The bright subject and then you are combining that with the dark undertone which is everything else around it and it works well. I am from a nontraditional standpoint based in tradition so it is a very interesting technique, and I also like the feathers.
Watercolor First Place #81 Robert Mesrop 42 Chevy Watercolor $1200
I like the drawing and the perspective of the vehicle. I really like all the reflective light and the softness of what he’s done in the background and how the buildings fall away, it’s really nicely done. So, you have a good composition, but I mostly like the reflective light and the way in which the watercolor itself is handled. The subject is really the truck, but the secondary images of the figures loading something in the background, I can’t tell what they’re loading. It tells a story and keeps me looking at it.
Watercolr Second Place #90 Joseph Forjan Boat Meadow Summer Watercolor $575
I like the landscape and the cloud structure. Good use of color and I like the overall sense that it’s not a watercolor-y looking piece but is still is a watercolor.
Photography First Place -Rebecca Bruyn First House #1 Digital Art-iPhoneography $1400
This is an intriguing piece with an interesting composition. The muted colors and overall filter effect make for an atmospheric mood that keeps your eye finding new and compelling bits of information.
Photography Second Place- Ruth Hauzinger Natural Abstraction Framed Photo on Canvas $300
Great photograph of with both recognizable and abstract shapes. The colors, refections and dark areas all contribute to a pleasing composition that keeps the viewer in the picture plane.
Other First Place- Wendi Smith White with Foam Pastel $400
What I like in this piece is the punch of warmth inside the crashing wave and the the way in which she captured the wind on the of the top of the wave. It’s also a great use of color and you get a lot of nice movement in it for a small piece. That’s a telltale sign that is is well done, that you can make it look right in such a small piece and it doesn’t look like it’s all jammed up.
Other Second Place - Betsy Payne Cook Effortless Pastel $650
With this one, there is a lot of challenges when dealing with reflective light in water and I think that Betsy did a great job and dealing with all of the reflections within the waves. I know it can be really tricky and I love how she handeled that.
